Baseball Humor

Edited and Narrated by Ward Paxton

From the selection of authors to Paxton’s audio delivery, this is a thoroughly enjoyable anthology of baseball stories. Paxton’s reading of our great satirists and humorists is akin to listening to Vin Scully calling the play-by-play of a live game; perfectly paced, exciting at the right moments, and a satisfying way to spend an afternoon. Enjoyed this quite a bit.

Description
Baseball Humor, a Collection of Stories by Master Storytellers, is an anthology of classic stories, well told, including The Pitcher and the Plutocrat by P G Wodehouse, Horseshoes by Ring Lardner, The Red-Headed Outfield by Zane Grey, Pitching Peculiarities by HOF pitcher Christy Mathewson, and many others. The book is filled with the struggles of rookies, the colorful banter of stars, the wisdom imparted none to gently by managers, nutty fans, and the romantic feelings of ball players in love. The collection of 14 stories were originally published from 1910 to 1923 when Major League Baseball was the only professional sport and at a time when cities had several competing newspapers trying to be most popular.  The sportswriters were the entertainers of the era anyone would enjoy, not just baseball fans.

It was thoroughly enjoyable, taking a step back in time and listening to the stories of Baseball. The author does a great job in reliving baseball humor and larger than life characters.
When listening to the audio version of the book, the author does a wonderful job in narrating the stories as if you were there back in time. The language used and the description of everything makes you feel as if you were right there, in the stadium, or with each character and their story.
Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, I would highly recommend this read or audiobook.
